Located at Khayaban-e-Shujaat, Fudo is easy to find amidst a couple of odd shops. The exterior might not be something you’ll love but take a step inside and your feelings will definitely change for the better.
First Impression
The place is casual. Few pieces of Chinese art adorn the walls. The light colours give the place a playful and airy look. The decorator has utilized the large windows; the place is flooded with sunlight.
Service
The waiter was really pleasant and brought us a basket of crackers even before we ordered.
Our Order
For starters, I ordered Hot and Sour Soup and Garlic Prawns. The main course was Beef Chili Dry and Chicken Manchurian with Chicken Fried Rice. On the waiter’s recommendation, I also ordered Fudo Special Fish. Unfortunately, their desserts weren’t available at that time so I just went with Iced Coffee.
The Food
First up was the Hot and Sour Soup and we got a surprise. Expecting to see the same old red coloured soup, I was surprised to see a wonderfully different delicacy. The soup was a blend of vegetable, chicken and egg. And let me tell you, the aroma was as tempting as the soup itself.
Next up were Garlic Prawns, freshly sautéed prawns. You will definitely need a breath mint after trying this but it’s worth the trouble. The sweet and sour taste will have you savouring every morsel. The serving was quite filling but soon I was ready to have the main course.
Beef Chili Dry looked simply ravishing, the presentation was good but it was a bit too oily and not too dry. The aroma of capsicums was quite overpowering and I loved it. Perfectly cooked to a 10, it was my favourite dish at Fudo.
Chicken Manchurian again would have you reaching for the breath mints and wasn’t the same ketchup thing you can get at every other restaurant nowadays. The sideline Chicken Fried Rice had just the right amount of vegetables, chicken and fried egg but the rice were a little undercooked.
On our waiter’s recommendation, we ordered the Fudo Special Fish, which was a disappointment actually. Fried fish, sautéed in a tangy, garlicky sauce did not offer the ‘special’ it promised.
Something Special
I just had to try their Ice Coffee. Imported from Austria, the Cappuccino had me swaying in the coffee trance. The chilled beverage made my day. As for the dessert, unfortunately, it wasn’t available at that time and I missed out on that.
The Presentation
The bowls were simple yet elegant. The overall presentation was quite nice. Nothing pretentious.
Value for Money
Yes, it is very economical. The main course Beef Chili Dry was just Rs. 400 and the add-on Chicken Fried Rice cost Rs. 100. So you can easily get a filling meal at a very good price.
Overall Verdict
The place is not an extravagant affair but the small, cozy place is the perfect place for a hangout with friends. So do head over to Fudo for a perfect lazy afternoon.
TIP: Don’t forget to bring your breath mints with you. And vampires beware. Fudo is not a place for you.
Thumbs down: The benches are quite uncomfortable unless you get one of the tables with chairs.
